My parents, born in the segregated South in the 1940s, are my heroes and the epitome of resilience, determination, and the indomitable human spirit. Their journey from a segregated and challenging environment to becoming the first in their family to attend college and ultimately achieve the remarkable feat of becoming doctors is awe-inspiring.

Growing up in an era marked by racial segregation and discrimination, my parents faced adversity that most people today can hardly fathom. They not only confronted the pervasive racism of the time but also the limited access to education and opportunities. Despite these formidable obstacles, my parents did not let adversity hold them back. Instead, they embraced the belief that education and hard work were the keys to transcending their circumstances and making the world a better place.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. HIM embodies just that. My father’s decision to join the Army speaks to their determination to overcome challenges and fulfill his dreams of becoming a pediatrician and also achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) in the United States Army. #RESPECT

The military provided him with a means to access education and pursue his ambitions. It's a testament to his unwavering commitment to self-improvement and his country.

My father’s ability to resist the vices and negative influences of his era is a reflection of his strong moral character and resilience. He remained focused on his goals, driven by a shared passion for healthcare and service to others. Over two decades of military service, he not only achieved the esteemed positions of pediatrician and LTC but also changed countless lives through his dedication to healing and caregiving.

Currently, as he is now a disabled Veteran, his accomplishments and now, physical, mental, and emotional traumas that remain, further underscore his sacrifice and commitment to serving his country. Despite the challenges he faced, he continued to give back to his community and the nation. His achievements as an African American man who defied the odds serve as an inspiration to others, proving that success knows no racial or societal boundaries.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. HIM was inspired by current experiences and treatment that my father has received, as he faces the later stages of life, it's disheartening to witness the angst and frustration when people underestimate or disrespect him and assume that his age is all that matters and they overlook… or more specifically, have NO CLUE what sacrifices, success, accomplishments he has earned or the fact that he has served so that you, everyone, can have the opportunities that exist today.

My father, like all Veterans, deserve the utmost respect and gratitude for their sacrifices. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. HIM is an homage to all Veterans who have dedicated their lives to preserving the freedoms and liberties that we often take for granted. Their service should never be diminished or overlooked.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. HIM is my impassioned plea for us all to recognize and respect everyone, regardless of age, race, gender or ethnicity. Preconceived notions, bigotry, and ignorance have no place in a world that values compassion and understanding. It's crucial that we never underestimate or judge individuals prematurely, for everyone has a unique story and a reservoir of experiences that shape their lives.

While my father has served his country so valiantly and equally sacrificed so much, as his daughter, my working at the Department of Veterans Affairs, is my attempt to make a difference in the lives of those who have served our country.

It's my mission, passion and one of the most noble endeavors I can ever undertake, to ensure that our Veterans receive the care, respect, and gratitude they rightfully deserve.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. HIM forces us to step a back and get back to the basics of human respect and dignity. Kindness and respect should be constants in our interactions with others, especially those who have sacrificed so much for the greater good of humanity. It's time to honor and appreciate the enduring legacy of our Veterans and acknowledge the debt of gratitude we owe them.

You should always seek to create a life that satisfies what your soul craves while appreciating and respecting all who have come before you – you can’t and would not have the opportunity to pursue your soul’s desires if our Veterans had not sacrificed so much.

The Mind•Full•Ness® Collection represents the many pieces of me - the good, the fun… and the not so fun life experiences that remain as lingering memories of mine or that are a reflection of some innermost facet of my being; while others are just random concepts that for some reason my mind couldn’t resist bringing to fruition and literally can be interpreted as or represent SO many other powerful ideas and concepts life's journey has revealed.

There are so many common, individual objects, things and baubles that when brought together and placed in this medium of expression - within each face - create what I believe is truly an unexpected but amazingly unique final piece of art.

This has been a much needed therapeutic and reenergizing passion project of mine and I truly feel that it’s helped me process and overcome some of the challenges that have been holding me back while inspiring me to stretch and grow, reclaim my artistic voice, realign my energy and rediscover who I am and what drives me in life.

The Universe provides so many opportunities in the form of challenges and victories and it is what we do with those opportunities to manifest our desired reality that determines our happiness.
