My parents, born in the segregated South in the 1940s, are my heroes and the epitome of resilience, determination, and the indomitable human spirit. Their journey from a segregated and challenging environment to becoming the first in their family to attend college and ultimately achieve the remarkable feat of becoming doctors is awe-inspiring.
Growing up in an era marked by racial segregation and discrimination, my parents faced adversity that most people today can hardly fathom. They not only confronted the pervasive racism of the time but also the limited access to education and opportunities. Despite these formidable obstacles, my parents did not let adversity hold them back. Instead, they embraced the belief that education and hard work were the keys to transcending their circumstances and making the world a better place.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T. HER embodies just that. My mother’s decision to join the Army speaks to their determination to overcome challenges and fulfill her dreams of becoming a Dermatologist and also achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) in the United States Army. #RESPECT
The military provided her with a means to access education and pursue her ambitions. It's a testament to her unwavering commitment to self-improvement and her country.
My mother’s ability to resist the vices and negative influences of her era is a reflection of her strong moral character and resilience. She remained focused on her goals, driven by a shared passion for healthcare and service to others. Over two decades of military service, she not only achieved the esteemed positions of dermatologist and LTC but also changed countless lives through her dedication to healing and caregiving.
Currently, as she is now a disabled Veteran, her accomplishments and now, physical, mental, and emotional traumas that remain, further underscore her sacrifice and commitment to serving her country. Despite the challenges she faced, she continued to give back to her community and the nation. Her achievements as an African American woman who defied the odds serve as an inspiration to others, proving that success knows no racial or societal boundaries.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T. HER was inspired by current experiences and treatment that my mother has received, as she faces the later stages of life, it's disheartening to witness the angst and frustration when people underestimate or disrespect her and assume that her age is all that matters and they overlook… or more specifically, have NO CLUE what sacrifices, success, accomplishments she has earned or the fact that she has served so that you, everyone, can have the opportunities that exist today.
My mother, like all Veterans, deserve the utmost respect and gratitude for their sacrifices. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. HER is an homage to all Veterans who have dedicated their lives to preserving the freedoms and liberties that we often take for granted. Their service should never be diminished or overlooked.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T. HER is my impassioned plea for us all to recognize and respect everyone, regardless of age, race, gender or ethnicity. Preconceived notions, bigotry, and ignorance have no place in a world that values compassion and understanding. It's crucial that we never underestimate or judge individuals prematurely, for everyone has a unique story and a reservoir of experiences that shape their lives.
While my mother has served her country so valiantly and equally sacrificed so much, as her daughter, my working at the Department of Veterans Affairs, is my attempt to make a difference in the lives of those who have served our country.
It's my mission, passion and one of the most noble endeavors I can ever undertake, to ensure that our Veterans receive the care, respect, and gratitude they rightfully deserve.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T. HER forces us to step a back and get back to the basics of human respect and dignity. Kindness and respect should be constants in our interactions with others, especially those who have sacrificed so much for the greater good of humanity. It's time to honor and appreciate the enduring legacy of our Veterans and acknowledge the debt of gratitude we owe them.
You should always seek to create a life that satisfies what your soul craves while appreciating and respecting all who have come before you – you can’t and would not have the opportunity to pursue your soul’s desires if our Veterans had not sacrificed so much.
